Gold price in euro vs dollar: the short answer

The gold price in euro is the world dollar price of gold converted at the EUR/USD exchange rate of the same moment. Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce, so if you save in Germany, what you hold moves with two things at once: gold itself and the euro against the dollar. The figure that matters to you is the euro price per gram for your karat, which you can follow live on our gold price in Germany page.

In September 2026, for example, gold fell 8.5% in dollars but only 6.5% in euros, so a saver in Germany lost noticeably less than the headlines said. This guide explains why the two prices often tell different stories, how to convert one into the other, how to work out what the gold in your drawer is worth in euros, why a dealer pays less than the screen price, and how to set an alert so you can stop checking the price every hour. If you also pay zakat on your gold, our guide to zakat on gold in Germany and the nisab in euros uses the same gram method.

Why does gold move differently in euros than in dollars?

Because the euro price is a division: the dollar price of an ounce divided by the number of dollars one euro buys. When the dollar strengthens, the euro price falls less than the dollar price, and can even rise. When the dollar weakens, someone who holds gold and counts in euros gains less than the headline suggests.

The World Gold Council’s monthly commentaries show this clearly. In August 2026 gold rose 13.3% in dollars and 12.6% in euros. In September 2026 it fell 8.5% in dollars but only 6.5% in euros, a month in which the Council named a stronger US dollar among the main reasons for the drop. Even the record highs came on different days: 29 January 2026 in dollars and 2 March 2026 in euros.

Over longer periods the gap widens. According to GOLD.DE, gold gained 66.47% in dollars in 2025 but 47.49% in euros, and from 1 January to 1 November 2026 it was down 10.68% in dollars and 5.98% in euros. For a saver whose life runs in euros, the dollar headline is only half of the story.

How do I convert the gold price from dollars to euros per gram?

You need three inputs, all from the same moment: the dollar price per troy ounce, the EUR/USD rate, and the weight conversion. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams.

  1. Divide the dollar price per ounce by the EUR/USD rate to get the euro price per ounce.
  2. Divide the result by 31.1035 to get the euro price per gram of pure 24K gold.
  3. Multiply by the fineness of your karat, for example 0.875 for 21K, to get the euro price per gram of your gold.

Two cautions. Mixing a gold price from one hour with an exchange rate from another gives a number nobody will actually pay. And sources use different benchmarks: an auction benchmark, a trading quote and a dealer’s own price can differ on the same day. Our live page does this conversion for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K automatically, so use the steps above only to check a number someone quotes to you.

What is my gold actually worth in euros?

Start from the pure gold content, not the total weight. A 20-gram bracelet stamped 875 contains 17.5 grams of pure gold; the same weight stamped 750 contains 15 grams. Multiply the pure content by today’s 24K price per gram and you have the metal value of the piece in euros.

StampKaratPure gold in 10 g
99924K9.99 g
91622K9.16 g
87521K8.75 g
75018K7.50 g
58514K5.85 g

A short checklist for valuing what you hold:

  • Weigh each piece on a precise scale and note the stamp.
  • Keep coins and bars separate from jewellery; they are priced differently.
  • Keep your invoices: the purchase date matters for tax, and a receipt makes resale easier.
  • Record the value in euros on the same day each month, from one source, so your comparison stays honest.

Why does a dealer pay less than the price I see?

The price on a chart is a market price for large trades. A dealer sells above it and buys back below it, and the difference covers minting, handling, storage and the dealer’s margin. In Goldreporter’s weekly survey of seven German precious metal dealers, published on 18 September 2026, Krugerrand coins sold at an average premium of 3.6% over the spot price, and the gap between the dealers’ selling and buyback prices stood at 6.3%.

Jewellery is usually bought back for its metal content only; the craftsmanship you paid for is rarely returned. Before you sell, ask two or three dealers for a written offer per gram for your karat and compare it with the live metal value. A simple way to read an offer: if the live metal value of your piece is 100 and a dealer offers 92, that dealer pays 8% below metal value, and you can put that percentage side by side with the other offers.

When you buy, note that under section 25c of the German VAT Act investment gold is exempt from VAT: bars of at least 995 fineness and gold coins of at least 900 fineness that meet the legal conditions. Jewellery is not covered by this exemption. If you receive an offer for gold or any other investment that looks unusually generous, our Deal Check helps you test it before you pay.

How do I set a gold price alert in euros?

Instead of watching the price all day, decide the level that matters to you and let it come to you. On our live gold page you choose a target price per gram of 24K gold in euros, pick whether the alert fires when the price drops to it or rises to it, and receive one email the moment it is reached.

  • Set the target in euros per gram, the unit you actually buy and sell in, not dollars per ounce.
  • If you hold 21K, divide your 21K target by 0.875 to get the 24K level for the alert.
  • Use a drop alert for a purchase you have planned and a rise alert for a sale you have already decided on.
  • Treat the alert as a signal to call dealers, not as the price you will receive; the dealer spread still applies.

Taxes and zakat: what changes when you count in euros?

For tax purposes in Germany, gains and losses are measured in euros. Under section 23 of the Income Tax Act, a gain on physical gold sold within one year of purchase can be taxable, while a sale after more than one year is generally tax-free; the conditions and exceptions are explained in our guide to taxes in Germany for Arab savers. Zakat is calculated in grams first and only then valued in euros on the day it falls due. This is general information, not tax or religious advice; ask a tax adviser or a scholar about your own case.

Questions people ask about gold in euros and dollars

Why is the gold price in euros different from the dollar price?

Gold is quoted in dollars, and the euro price is that quote converted at the current exchange rate, so every move in EUR/USD changes the euro price even when gold itself is flat.

If gold falls in dollars, does it fall in euros too?

Usually, but not by the same amount. In September 2026 gold fell 8.5% in dollars and 6.5% in euros, according to the World Gold Council.

How do I calculate the euro value of 21K gold I own?

Multiply the weight in grams by 0.875 to get the pure gold, then multiply by today’s 24K euro price per gram from the live page.

Can I get an alert in euros per gram instead of dollars per ounce?

Yes. Our gold page lets you set a target in euros per gram of 24K and sends one email when it is reached.

Is profit from selling gold taxable in Germany?

Physical gold held for more than one year is generally tax-free when sold; within one year the gain can be taxable. Check your own case with a tax adviser.
